jumpcut movie:Zimbabwe Elephant Control (PAC) Hunt Feb 2007
Elephant Hunting in Zimbabwe Today

Zimbabwe is blessed with a large elephant population, beyond sustainable levels. These elephant cause substantial damage to the ecosystems as well as to agricultural production. Hence, Zimbabwe offers a spectrum of inexpensive elephant hunts to visiting hunters, at prices substantially below those prevailing in other African countries.

PAC (Problem Animal Control) hunts: elephants travel long distances and are extremely intelligent. Even though vast areas of Zimbabwe are set aside as National Parks and Safari Areas, none are fenced and the elephant are free to move out of these areas, which they do when it suits them. They have learned that subsistence and commercial farming activity in neighboring areas offer easy pickings at certain times of the year...March/April during the harvest of grain crops. In addition, late in the year when the bush is unusually dry, they will make excursions for water at windmills and stock watering points. These elephant, mainly the younger bulls who are bolder than cows and not as smart as older bulls, are quite destructive. Thus, the Parks Dept issues permits for marauding elephant and these permits are the basis of PAC hunts. The hunting is conducted mainly at night, on foot using portable spotlights, since the elephant have learned that areas of human habitation are dangerous so they tend to do their mischief under cover of darkness. The client is expected to shoot at the first safe opportunity to take a bull, regardless of size; and only one elephant is taken from a group, this being sufficient to deter the remaining animals, at least for a period of several weeks during which time the harvest can be completed. These hunts are inexpensive and hair-raising. The trophy is not exportable, however one can have fiberglass replicas made of the tusks. The meat is utilized by the community.

Management hunts are offered in certain Safari areas (beware of operators offering hunts in National Parks, as this is illegal), for younger bulls taken on foot during daylight hours. The meat is utilized by the Parks Dept for their staff, and the tusks are taken to the central stores. Only younger bulls, or very old bulls with broken tusks are taken. These hunts are also inexpensive. Other species such as buffalo and hippo can be taken at a discounted no-export price. Plains game can be hunted for export at normal trophy fees.

Trophy hunts, where the hide and tusks can be exported, are offered in all the major Safari areas and in some communal areas and Campfire areas. These hunts are for mature bulls although it must be stated that a 40lb per side elephant is considered shootable in Zimbabwe due to genetics and herd demographics. These hunts are more costly, almost three times the cost of PAC or Management hunt, but still about half of the going rate in other countries. Tuskless cows can be taken as well, at a cost comparable to a PAC or management bull hunt. These hunts are of a longer duration, for while many elephant will be spotted each day, heavy-tusked bulls and tuskless cows (without calves) are few and far between.

2009 PRICING

Parks Management Hunt Pricing

For 2009, we have a special quota for hunts in Parks-supervised safari areas on Lake Kariba and the lower Zambezi. The quota is limited to 4 bull elephant, 4 tuskless, 4 hippo and 6 buff. Accommodation in permanent lodge. We are offering these 7 day hunts at a special daily rate of $500, plus the usual 2% gov't levy and $10/day medevac insurance. The elephant are not exportable in any form; hippo and buff are exportable. You can choose your hunt "on the fly", subject to remaining quota. Any remaining time on these hunts can be allocated to fishing on the lake or plains game hunting near Karoi on private land. See plains game trophy fee schedule for pricing.

VUTI/PAC Hunt Pricing

PAC hunts are similar to management hunts in that the elephant are not exportable, but are conducted on private land and thus night hunting is legal. This is a big plus when hunting leopard, which are exportable. We do have two elephant CITES permits for this area so if the elephant is a good one, it can be exported at the client's option, at the normal trophy fee ($12000).
